GamesForest.Club is a non-profit company, based in Berlin (Germany), which supports the Games- and Creative Industries to actively invest in carbon absorption via planting and protecting forests. Our goal is to protect and restore nature with the power of gaming and together with the good hearts and minds of our industry.
We see nature restoration as a major cornerstone to fight climate change. The latest numbers from the WWF show that we are losing 30 football fields of forests every minute1. With that we are losing our biggest ally in the fight against climate change as forests absorb huge amounts of carbon. If we don’t get that problem under control, even transformations of the biggest carbon releasing industries will run into nowhere.
We know the phenomenon climate change and its causes (greenhouse gases, especially carbon, methane,…) since the 1950s. Since the 70s and 80s it is seen as a fact in the scientific community. The important role of forests as absorber of carbon is known even longer but all education hasn’t forced us so far to take massive action against it. We are losing more forest than ever before. Deforestation in the amazonas in 2020 was on a record high, massive forest fires in recent years in several regions of the planet have intensified the effect. Consequently 2020 was the hottest year since the beginning of climate measures.
And of course, the games industry is a massive polluter itself but wants to go upfront and show responsibility. The GamesForest.Club wants to help our members and sponsors to live up to their responsibilities.
“No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it!” – Albert Einstein
We want to follow a different approach with the GamesForest.Club, because we know that game mechanics can change behavior and that when we measure and manage our impact and show it in a playful way (that’s why we created the gamesforest as digital twin) that it can make fun to fight climate change.
Climate Change is of course by far the biggest challenge humankind ever faced; this also means that there lies the biggest heroes’ journey of our livetimes directly in front of us. Luckily Gaming Companies know best how to design massive challenges in a way that players accept the challenge and have fun with it.
We see a huge interest and already engagement for the climate change challenge in the games industry. With the GamesForest.Club we want to cover the engagement of the whole games industry. All restoration activities in real life will be therefore shown in the digital twin “gamesforest” to keep track playfully on the support of the games industry against climate change.
This is what we want to offer with the GamesForest.Club, so join us and let us go on this heroe’s journey together!
The Sustainable Development Goals are a call for action by all countries – poor, rich and middle-income – to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection.
By its work GamesForest.Club supports 8 goals out of 17.
